#58/365--Sick Boy gets Bored

My son has been running a bit of a temperature for the past 24 hours, stuffy head, plugged ears, sore throat...probably-hopefully-allergies, but I wasn't taking any chances and much to his great pleasure, I made him stay home from church.  There were stipulations though.  No Xbox.  Well, sometime in the 2 hours that Lauren and I were gone to church, boredom struck.  Michael used my phone to take over 200 pictures of his face, in progression, so that when you click the arrow that takes you to the next picture, it looks a bit like a movie...sort of.  I'm, obviously, not posting all 200 pics.  I just picked a few to share.  Little does he know his silliness gets to be my pictures of the day!

#56/365--Fun Friday

Fridays are those days of the week
--for me, at least--
where you heave a big sigh of relief.
The week is finally coming to a close.
I am more relaxed with the kids in the classroom,
and we have "Fun Fridays."
I left home early so I could get...
...which was going to be my picture of the day...
Until, just a little bit later.
This week, our Kindergarten has been learning
about North America, USA, and presidents.
To culminate, we trace their profiles to make silhouettes, glue them to American flags (another craft made by the kiddos) and then place them in the hallway so the parents (during open house) can guess which is their child.  I usually put my silhouette up as well (just to be a good sport), and normally, I have another teacher trace me.  Today, however...it was Fun Friday.  My kiddos had worked hard all week and they were really getting into the whole shadow thing.  So I decided to pick two kiddos that I knew I could trust, to trace my profile....and...once again, being a good sport so that my followers here can get a good kick out of it, here were the results...which quickly became my photos of the day...

So, yeah.  I had Mrs. Sparks come trace me.

#51/365--Bridge

Bridges.  We've all driven over them or under them.  Possibly, we've built an occasional bridge or unfortunately, burned a bridge or two.  The purpose of a bridge is to close the gap between two places to ensure safe passage.  Or, it's a connection between two places in time.  It could be a part of your body, like the bridge of your nose, or some sort of dentistry that I've heard of.  Bridges can also be found in musical passages.  It's that place that spans the gap between stanzas, perhaps that amazing guitar solo.

When an engineer is designing a bridge, I imagine (as I am not an engineer) a lot has to be taken into consideration, measured, added,
subtracted, divided, multiplied, surveyed,
angled, drawn out, dug up, filled in.
A bridge has to be built with precision, an exacting task.  For what would happen if you were driving over one, and it collapsed?  Or what if you were under one, as I was today.  I took a moment (safely, mind you, I was at a red light) and thought about this as I examined the structure above me.
Is this similar to building a relationship?  Going from one level of trust to the next?  Possibly.  And possibly, perhaps, this is why so many relationships fail.  It takes careful consideration, measurement, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, surveying, angling, drawing out, digging up, and filling in.  It takes time.  Communication.  Openness.  Humility.  Selflessness.
Orange barrels and cones.
If I am going to build bridges with the people in my life,
I want to be explicit, purposeful,
 in my time and words.
I want sturdy bridges that hold up under pressure, that can hold the weight of what this world sometimes throws at us.
Unfortunately, I've burned a number of bridges in my lifetime.  That comes with regrets.  But, I hope to use the wisdom from my experiences to build upon the future, and hopefully, won't make the same mistakes.
I better get my hard hat.

#47/365--It's That Time

I can't express the feelings this evokes in me.  Mikey had baseball practice tonight.  The temperature was mild, except for the cool wind.  The sky was clear.  The sounds of balls hitting gloves, bats hitting balls, dirt crunching under cleats...Baseball is just so much fun to me.  And this felt like "home."
Bring on Spring and Summer!

#42/365--Visiting Nanna and Versing Bananas

My dad always loved to eat at Chili's when we would get together as a family.  Call it habit or call it, "In Memory of," but anytime my mom comes to visit, that's where we eat!

And of course we had to go for dessert afterward...but before we had dessert, Lauren and Mikey had to have a "Banana War."

#40/365--The Leader of the Band

((My dad, a teacher through and through.
Not the leader of any musical grouping...but in metaphorical terms,
the leader of our familial "band."))

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru' my instrument
And his song is in my soul

My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man

I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And Papa I don't think I said
"I love you" near enough.
